Short video service TikTok may be getting a new search feature that will use generative artificial intelligence (AI). The feature is called Search Highlights and is already being tested.
As reportedThe Verge, a section of AB-generated results appears at the top of some TikTok search results pages. Clicking on it opens a new page with a longer answer, which also mentions that the results were generated by ChatGPT and that TikTok displays content "when the algorithm deems it matches a user's search query."
Currently, this functionality is limited and not all queries may return AB-generated search results.
As The Verge points out, the service already has a similar feature, but it doesn't say it uses AB and it's not clear where the information it provides is taken from. TikTok has not yet responded to The Verge's request for comment on the matter.
Recently, some users have started using the video service as a search engine. It seems that the developers of TikTok are trying to make sure that users can really find answers to their questions in the app. Furthermore, TikTok appears to be adding content from creators in AB search results to further entice audiences to use the video service.
