30 US states have sued Meta over the harmful effects of Instagram and Facebook on children and teenagers, as well as violations of their privacy laws. The states demand more than 1 trillion dollars from Meta and the implementation of a number of changes in the platforms. These include eliminating the number of "likes" for under-18s, introducing a parental approval system, ending endless scrolling and auto-playing videos, as well as changing recommendation algorithms.
Meta denies the allegations, stating that the company has been supporting young users for many years. If the 30 states win the lawsuit, the changes could spread across the United States. Those states represent almost two-thirds of the country's population.
