Today, July 5, the Republic of Armenia celebrates the Constitution Day.
In 1995 On July 5, for the first time in the history of independent Armenia, a popular referendum was held for the adoption of the RA Constitution. It was passed almost unanimously.
According to the constitution, the Republic of Armenia was finally declared a democratic, social and legal state, the functions of the three branches of government (legislative, executive and judicial) were clearly separated.
The rights and freedoms of man and citizen were fixed by the constitution.
In the past years, the basic law of the country was changed twice through referendums. for the first time it was changed by referendum on November 27, 2005. The last constitutional changes took place on December 6, 2015. The current constitution consists of a preamble and sixteen chapters.
With the change, Armenia transitioned from a semi-presidential model of governance to a parliamentary model of governance.
According to the decision of the RA government on July 4, 2013, July 5 is celebrated not only as the day of the Constitution, but also the day of state symbols.
