Durov wanted to turn Telegram into a video platform

The Telegram messenger “took the first step” towards becoming a video platform. The founder of this messenger, entrepreneur Pavel Durov, wrote about this in his Telegram channel.

According to the businessman, until now, videos in various chats and channels on Telegram were displayed in the same format in which they were published. Because of this, users were forced to wait until their phones downloaded gigabytes of information and the videos were completely loaded. At the same time, problems arose even when viewing short entries, the founder of the messenger emphasized.

“With today’s update, Telegram servers will compress popular videos into several quality options and optimize them for streaming,” Durov noted.

He clarified that thanks to this innovation, the messenger will begin to automatically select in what quality to play a particular video. The speed of the Internet connection on each individual user’s devices will play a key role in this process.

On October 8, Durov announced that new functions would appear in Telegram. This includes the ability to view the editing time of publications and, if necessary, send media files after sending the initial message.

Previously, the Telegram messenger expanded the list of grounds for complaints about content in chats and channels.
