The prices of gasoline and diesel fuel in the European Union have reached the highest historical level. Now, to completely fill a 50-liter tank with gasoline, on average, you need about 103 euros, and with diesel, about 108 euros. Euronews writes about this, referring to the data of the European Commission.
As of September 14, the average price of one liter of gasoline in the EU was 2,063 euros, and diesel - 2,159 euros. In both cases, this is the highest indicator since 2005, when the European Commission started keeping such statistics.
At the same time, fuel prices in different EU countries differ significantly. The cheapest petrol is in Malta at €1.34 per litre, and the most expensive in Denmark at €2.56. Diesel fuel is also the cheapest in Malta at €1.21 and the most expensive in Finland at €2.51 per litre.
Fuel prices have been rising for several months. Euronews connects this with the US-Iran war that started at the end of February and disruptions in the supply of energy carriers through the Strait of Hormuz. During the most tense period of the conflict, the price of Brent oil exceeded 126 dollars per barrel, while it was about 72 dollars before the war.
Since the beginning of 2026, the average price of gasoline in the EU has increased by about 29 percent, and that of diesel fuel by almost 40 percent.
However, the reason for the price increase is not only the price of oil. Oil refining costs and margins of oil refining companies have also increased. In addition, taxes make up a significant part of the final price. According to the calculations of the European Central Bank, in July excise tax and VAT together made up about 44 percent of the retail price of diesel, and in the case of gasoline, 52 percent.
The experts of the European Central Bank do not rule out that especially diesel fuel may become more expensive. According to their estimation, the diesel processing margin can reach the maximum level in October.
According to experts, the end of the war in the Middle East, the restoration of the normal transportation of energy carriers through the Strait of Hormuz, and the increase in global oil refining volumes are important for the decrease in prices.
