At least 66 people have been killed in the Philippines as a result of Typhoon Calmaeg, six of whom were killed in the crash of the country's air force helicopter that was sent to the storm-hit provinces to provide humanitarian aid. The rest were killed by floods, landslides, fallen trees and collapsed buildings, the Philippine Disaster Management Agency said. Another 26 people are still considered missing. More than 430,000 people were forced to leave their homes. Due to the elements, air traffic and ferry traffic were suspended.
About 20 typhoons and hurricanes hit the Philippines every year. There are more than a dozen active volcanoes there, and earthquakes occur frequently.
