The former president of Peru was sentenced to 20 years in prison for corruption

The court sentenced the former president of Peru, Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), to 20.5 years in prison in the case of corruption, in which the Brazilian construction corporation "Odebrecht" was also involved.

"The judiciary has sentenced the former president of the Republic, Alejandro Toledo, to 20 years and 6 months in prison for crimes such as conspiracy and money laundering in the context of the Transatlantic Highway case," X said on the country's judicial system page.

According to the court, Toledo helped Odebrecht get a contract to build two sections of the highway connecting Brazil and Peru in exchange for a $35 million bribe.

Toledo was arrested in April 2023 by US authorities in the state of California, where he had lived in recent years, and was extradited to his homeland. The arrest warrant against the former president has been in force since 2017.
