Politico: The US will not shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine due to the risk of war with the Russian Federation

The United States does not plan to comply with Kyiv’s requests to shoot down Russian missiles and drones in Ukrainian airspace due to the risk of a nuclear conflict with Moscow. This was reported by the European edition of the newspaper Politico, citing sources.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky was outraged that the United States is participating in repelling Iranian attacks against Israel, but at the same time refuses to use its armed forces to destroy Russian missiles. “The hard answer, which the Ukrainians may not like to hear, is that we can take the risk of shooting down Iranian missiles over Israel without starting a direct war with Tehran, which could lead to a nuclear conflict. Trying to do this with Russia has its own risks. with much greater risk,” a source in the Senate explained to the publication. As Politico added, several representatives of the administration of US President Joe Biden also expressed a similar point of view.
The publication also noted that to provide assistance to Israel, Washington needs air defense systems located on ships. However, to destroy Russian missiles and drones in the airspace of Ukraine, which is significantly larger in territory than Israel, the United States will have to send its ground-based air defense systems and fighters there. Such measures entail the risk of a direct clash with the Russian Armed Forces, which the White House would like to avoid, Politico concludes. Earlier, Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said that the destruction by the armed forces of Western countries of Russian missiles over Ukraine would involve the United States in the conflict . Thus, she commented on the question of the possibility of shooting down Russian missiles from the territory of Poland or Romania.
