An optometrist dispels the myths that constantly wearing glasses is harmful

The idea that constantly wearing glasses is harmful to the eye muscles is actually a myth. This does not weaken the eye muscles and does not impair vision, Harry Cooper optometrist Olga Sakharova told Gazeta.Ru.

According to the expert, glasses are needed to correct light refraction disorders such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. This accessory does not affect the eyes themselves in any way. The only exceptions are those that are specifically prescribed to treat strabismus (the scientific name for strabismus) or amblyopia, where one eye develops incorrectly and cannot focus on an object as well as the other. “When glasses or contact lenses are prescribed by an ophthalmologist, they should be used . Also, do not take breaks from wearing it to give your eyes a rest. On the contrary, if you do not wear glasses as directed, your eyes will become strained and tired. The effect will be exactly the opposite,” she said.

Another myth that the expert dispelled is the opposite: glasses help the eyes feel comfortable and not strain, but due to relaxation, wrinkles appear. This myth can even be called harmful. The fact is that wrinkles around the eyes are primarily caused by factors such as aging, sun exposure and repetitive facial expressions. The latter may include squinting due to too bright light or vision problems.

“In regions with high solar activity, it is worth considering options for vision glasses with photochromic lenses, which can change the degree of darkening depending on solar activity. This will help reduce the need to squint, and therefore reduce the influence of this factor on the appearance of wrinkles. But it’s important to note here that other factors, such as using sunscreen and maintaining good skin care habits, play a more important role in the issue of wrinkles,” Sakharova added.

The expert also drew attention to other beneficial properties of wearing glasses that are not directly related to vision or the formation of facial wrinkles. For example, such an accessory helps you express your individuality and feel more psychologically comfortable.

“The time has passed when wearing glasses seemed unfashionable. If desired, regular glasses can be used as a way to get closer to your favorite actors or musicians, thereby sharing part of their image and, possibly, self-confidence,” the optometrist concluded.
