Seismologists recorded 646 aftershocks after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit China's southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region, the China Seismological Center said Wednesday.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred on Tuesday at 9:05 local time in Tingri County, Shigatsi Region, Tibet Autonomous Region. The source of the earthquake was located at a depth of 10 kilometers. To date, authorities have confirmed the death of 126 people, with another 188 injured.
Earlier, the Russian Embassy in China reported that there is no information about the presence of Russian citizens in the disaster zone.
"As of 12:00 on January 8 (7:00 Moscow time), a total of 646 aftershocks were recorded, including 422 aftershocks below 2.0 magnitude, 192 aftershocks between 3.0 and 3.9 magnitude, 28 with .3 magnitude and four points - 4.0 to 4.9 max.
An aftershock with a magnitude of 4.4 was recorded approximately 18 kilometers from the epicenter of the main shock," the center said in a statement.
