The European Commission has launched formal proceedings against the TikTok platform, suspecting that it does not comply with European laws to prevent foreign interference in Romania's elections. This is stated in the statement issued by the EC, Ria Novosti reports.
"The European Commission has today opened formal proceedings against TikTok for alleged violations of the Digital Services Act in the context of the recent presidential elections in Romania. - says the document. The European Commission, seriously concerned about the unsatisfactory results of the first round of the presidential elections in Romania, where a "non-European" candidate campaigning on TikTok won, announced on December 5 that it is strengthening control over this platform.
The EC clarified that TikTok was ordered to preserve all data that could be related to "systemic risks". What the service may represent for electoral processes, including possible violations of paid political content, "information manipulation" or so-called "foreign interference attempts".
