A horse-drawn cart collided with a tree in Switzerland. a 73-year-old woman was killed, there are injured

A 73-year-old woman was killed and several other people were injured in a horse-drawn cart accident in Switzerland, SRF reports.

The incident took place in the canton of Graubünden, when a tourist group of about 40 people was returning to Pontresina in two horse-drawn carts after an excursion through the Rosegtal Valley.

In the downhill part of the road, the driver of one of the carts noticed that the brakes were not working efficiently enough. He tried to direct the three-horse cart to a smoother part of the road in order to reduce the speed. However, at the beginning of the maneuver, one of the horses fell, after which the driver lost the ability to control the cart.

The cart collided with a tree on the side of the road at a high speed, and some of the passengers were thrown out of the cart. The 73-year-old woman received fatal injuries and died on the spot.

The victims were transported to hospitals in the canton of Graubünden by three helicopters and four ambulances. Those members of the group who were not injured were assisted by crisis services specialists operating in Pontresina.

All participants of the tour group are residents of Switzerland.

The circumstances of the accident are being investigated by the prosecutor's office and the Graubünden cantonal police.
