Turkey is ready to make the necessary contribution to demining the Strait of Hormuz along with diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced at the NATO summit in Ankara.
"In addition to our diplomatic efforts, we are ready to make the necessary contribution to demining the Strait of Hormuz," Erdogan said. Erdogan once again noted that the only way to long-term peace in the Middle East remains the two-state solution.
He noted that the international community should work together to ensure a ceasefire and restore calm in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and is one of the world's most important oil and liquid natural gas export routes. About one-fifth of the world's oil reserves pass through it, so any threat to shipping in this area has implications for global energy markets and the global economy.
