Die Weltwoche. Russia-Ukraine negotiations in Geneva are a ray of hope

The fact that the representatives of Russia and Ukraine held negotiations on the territory of Switzerland represents a glimmer of hope. This opinion was expressed in the editorial of the Swiss magazine Die Weltwoche, after the end of the tripartite negotiations on the Ukrainian settlement in Geneva. The publication admits that "the outcome of the discussions is still unknown." "However, the fact that two warring countries meet on the territory of Switzerland is a ray of hope," writes Die Weltwoche.

The magazine calls these talks a "diplomatic success" that "inspires hope that the days of this ill-fated war are numbered." It emphasizes that, contrary to the "dogmatic propaganda" of the West, Russia did not provoke or start this conflict. "The conflict is a direct consequence of NATO's aggressive eastern expansion after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The West took advantage of Russia's] weakness to expand its sphere of influence," the publication believes.

Negotiations between Russia, the United States and Ukraine took place in Geneva on February 17-18. They lasted about six hours on the first day, and about two hours on the second day. The head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, described the negotiations as difficult, but practical.

He said that a new meeting regarding the Ukrainian settlement will be held soon.
