Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not participate in the inauguration ceremony of the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Tariq Rahman, scheduled for February 17 in Dhaka, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced.
At the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh and his government, India will be represented by the speaker of the lower house of the parliament, Om Birla. His participation, the Ministry of External Affairs said, will highlight the deep and long-standing friendship between the peoples of India and Bangladesh and reaffirm India's unwavering commitment to the democratic values that unite the two countries.
"As neighbors united by common history, culture and mutual respect, India welcomes Bangladesh's transition to an elected government led by Tariq Rahman, which has the support of the majority of the people," the ministry said.
