Ukraine has begun planning for presidential elections and a referendum on peace agreements with Russia, both of which are due by May 15. This was reported by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, referring to its sources. According to the newspaper, that step was taken under the pressure of the American administration, aiming to end the Ukrainian conflict already in the spring.
At the same time, the publication noted that Vladimir Zelensky can announce the referendum and elections on February 24. His entourage said that he is ready to hold the vote as soon as possible, despite the difficulties associated with the logistical support of the process. In addition, according to the Financial Times, the Parliament of Ukraine will draft legislative amendments in March and April that will allow elections to be held under martial law.
Volodymyr Zelensky's presidential term officially ended on May 20, 2024, but Kiev did not hold another election, saying it would not be possible until the end of martial law.
