The explosion took place in a mosque in the Tarlai district of Islamabad. Earlier, Dawn newspaper reported about 24 victims.
"At least 31 people were killed and 169 injured in the capital as a result of an explosion at a mosque during Friday prayers," a representative of the district administration told Dawn.
