The largest iceberg iceberg, A23A, has broken again. Four huge pieces were turned off, as a result of which the total area of the ice decreased by almost 20 percent. Now the ice block occupies an area of about 1423 square kilometers, maintaining its lead among all known icebergs. This was reported to the Telegramian channel of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.
Experts from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute note that the broken fragments, the total area of which make up more than 800 square kilometers, are moving independent of each other.
It is noted that the ice masses do not risk for navigation. They are large enough to be reliably registered by ships radar. The melting process also does not affect the level of the ocean. Melting happens gradually.
Since 1986, when the iceberg occupied an area of 4170 square kilometers, it passed in several stages of decay.
