Earlier this year, Georgia passed laws on foreign agents and a ban on LGBT propaganda, which were criticized in Europe and the United States.
“The European Council recalls that this course of action jeopardizes Georgia’s European path and de facto stops the accession process,” the statement said.
The document also calls on Georgia to “carry out democratic, comprehensive and sustainable reforms in accordance with the basic principles of European integration.” The fact that the leadership of the European Union decided to suspend the integration process of Georgia was announced in July 2024 by the EU Ambassador to the country Pavel Gerchinsky.
He said that the EU leaders made the decision at a meeting on June 27. The ambassador expressed hope that the new government will “resume serious work” towards Georgia's integration into the EU after the elections in October.
