Three buildings partially collapsed in Turkey due to earthquake


The head of the Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ali Erlikaya, said that as a result of the earthquake of magnitude 5.9, three buildings partially collapsed, but there were no casualties. “Following the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Malatya, AFAD [Emergencies Directorate] and our relevant agencies continue to study the situation on the ground in the provinces of Malatya, Diyarbakir, Sanliurfa, Elazig, Batman and Tunceli. The authorities of the provinces affected by the disaster also reported that there was no emergency situation. The earthquake was felt in Diyarbakir, Elazig, Kahramanmaraş, Tokat, Erzincan, Tunceli and Adıyaman. In Malatya, which became the epicenter, authorities declared school holidays on October 17. Impact assessments are ongoing in all of these regions. Some buildings have cracks, and authorities are asking the public not to go inside until experts carry out an examination.
The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center reported a magnitude of 6.1. The epicenter of the disaster was 47 km east of the city of Malatya, where about 441 thousand people live.
