Severely swollen Danube river in Budapest as water expected to rise further

Authorities in the Hungarian capital Budapest were scrambling to bolster flood defences on the banks of the already swollen Danube river as water levels were expected to rise further as a result of the extreme downpours that battered parts of central Europe over the last week, according to reports on Thursday. Footage filmed by a Budapest showed the river having already burst its banks on the Pest side, and news reports said that water levels in the river could rise to 850 centimetres above normal on Saturday. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was quoted in reports on Wednesday as saying that the country had entered its most challenging phase of dealing with the current wave of flooding. According to the latest reports, at least 24 people have been confirmed dead in the flooding in central Europe, which has been described as the worst to hit the affected areas in decades. This footage, filmed from the Pest side of Budapest on Thursday morning, shows flooding on the banks of the Danube.
