1991 On October 16, he was elected the President of the Republic of Armenia with an overwhelming majority of votes (83.4%).

1996 As a result of the controversial presidential elections of September 22, but recognized as legal by international observation missions, he was re-elected as the President of the Republic of Armenia with 51.75% of the votes.

1998 on February 3, due to fundamental disagreements with RA Prime Minister Robert Kocharyan, Minister of Defense Vazgen Sargsyan, and Minister of Security and Internal Affairs Serzh Sargsyan, and in order to protect the country from internal political upheavals, he resigned from the post of RA President. Along with him, for the same reasons, many other leaders and responsible workers of the republic voluntarily resigned from their positions.

2007 in the fall, a number of political forces and non-governmental organizations nominated a candidate for the RA president.

2008 According to official data, in the elections held on February 19, he received 21.51%, and his main competitor, Serzh Sargsyan, received 52.82% of votes. According to the US Embassy in Armenia, however, Ter-Petrosyan actually received 30-35% of the vote, which means that a second round of elections should have been scheduled, in which, according to the same source, Ter-Petrosyan would definitely win.

2008 at the dawn of March 1, after the ten-day peaceful, continuous rallies and sit-ins of the popular protest were forcibly dispersed by the authorities, Ter-Petrosyan was illegally subjected to a one-month de facto house arrest, which is recorded in the resolutions adopted by international organizations.

2008 on the evening of March 1, the police, on the instructions of the higher authorities, used firearms against the participants of the elemental demonstration in the area adjacent to Myasnikyan Square, as a result of which ten people were killed and several dozen people were injured. After that, according to the decree of Robert Kocharyan, a state of emergency was illegally declared in the city of Yerevan, and hundreds of Ter-Petrosyan's supporters were arrested, 90 of them were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment.

2012 In the May 6 National Assembly elections, leading the list of the "Armenian National Congress" bloc, Ter-Petrosyan was elected as a deputy, but resigned from his mandate.

2013 On April 13, he was elected the chairman of the "Armenian National Congress" party, which is the successor of the "Armenian National Movement". He is fluent in Armenian and Russian, speaks French, English, German, Arabic, Assyrian, Aramaic, ancient Greek, Latin and ancient Hebrew at a sufficient level. from languages.
