Tiran Khachatryan was detained for 2 months

Tiran Khachatryan, the former deputy chief of the General Staff of the RA Armed Forces, was detained for two months. Khachatryan's defense group issued a statement about this.

It is specifically stated in the distributed statement:

"As it was assumed, after not giving enough time to get acquainted with the 1200-page case, Judge Masis Melkonyan, ignoring the lack of reasonable suspicion and grounds for detention, granted the petition of the investigator and detained Lieutenant General Tiran Khachatryan for 2 months.

The unfoundedness of the charge against Tiran Khachatryan and the lack of grounds for his arrest were fully substantiated at the court session that lasted for about 5 hours.
Considering the circumstances that:
a) this is one of the unique cases of detaining a person accused of a crime of medium gravity,
b) there is literally no basis for detention, and the abstract possibility of obstruction is denied by the actual behavior of Tiran Khachatryan during the 4-year investigation.
c) the statute of limitations is approaching in this case, and Tiran Khachatryan does not face imprisonment for this charge (and in this regard, there is a clear precedent position of the Court of Cassation that detention is not applicable)
d) it was not substantiated that in such an unprecedented situation, the combination of alternative measures of restraint (bail and house arrest) would not curb the cited abstract risk of obstruction.
We confidently assert that a differentiated approach was applied to Tiran Khachatryan, which is not justified by the law and the ECHR and the judicial practice of the Republic of Armenia. In other words, Tiran Khachatryan was detained not to ensure the course of the proceedings, which has been going on for 4 years, but to punish him for his active political and civil position, as also in order to order the "culprits" of the defeat of the war.
We will go into more detail next and as needed.
Tiran Khachatryan will be detained in "Vardashen" prison.

Tiran Khachatryan's defenders: Armen Andrikyan, Varazdat Harutyunyan.
