The Indian authorities have decided to declare a seven-day mourning period in connection with the death of the country's former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, TASS reports, citing the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs.
"As a mark of respect to the deceased high-ranking person, a seven-day national mourning will be observed in India from December 26, 2024 to January 1, 2025 inclusive. During that time, the national flag will be lowered all over India, no official entertainment events will be held," the department said.
The authorities have also decided to perform the funeral at the state level. It is expected to take place on December 28. "On the day of the funeral, the national flag will also be flown at all Indian embassies abroad," the department said.Manmohan Singh died on December 26 at the age of 92 in the emergency department, where he was taken from his home in an unconscious state. As the doctors noted, Singh was suffering from a number of diseases characteristic of the elderly.
Despite all the efforts of the doctors, he could not be revived. Manmohan Singh was a member of India's oldest political party, the Indian National Congress. He held the post of Prime Minister for two consecutive terms, from May 2004 to May 2014. Manmohan Singh attached great importance to the BRICS association.
