"The latest statement by the legal defense of Ruben Vardanyan, who was captured by Azerbaijan on September 27, 2023 and is under illegal detention in Baku prison, that 45 false accusations threatening him with life imprisonment, is deeply worrying.
The accusation brought against Ruben Vardanyan by the Aliyev regime is a clear political farce, the purpose of which is not only to discredit Ruben Vardanyan, but also to divert international attention from the crimes of Azerbaijan against the people of Artsakh.
Ruben Vardanyan's entire activity in Artsakh was aimed at solving the vital needs of the population that was under siege by Azerbaijan, subjected to hunger, severe deprivation, ethnic cleansing and military aggression.
The support included food supply, immediate solutions to health problems and other basic needs, as evidenced by the programs implemented in Artsakh by the We Are Our Mountains organization.
The international community should not remain silent in the face of such gross violations of human rights. This open attack of the Aliyev regime is directed not only against Ruben Vardanyan, but also against justice, international law, fundamental rights and freedoms stipulated by international treaties and conventions.
It is imperative that the democratic world take decisive steps to ensure a fair trial, the presence of international observers and full transparency of the judicial process.
We also call on the civil society of Armenia and the whole world, as well as international organizations and states, to strongly condemn the illegal unemployment of Ruben Vardanyan and express their support to him and all the Armenian prisoners held in Baku.
The world cannot remain indifferent when one of its most famous humanitarians is persecuted for fighting for justice and dignity."
