The newly elected US President Donald Trump had a "good" telephone conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This was reported by a Reuters source.
"It was a good discussion and they will stay in touch," he said. According to The New York Times, the call, initiated by Trudeau, came two hours after Trump announced plans to impose tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, which form part of the Trilateral Trade Agreement (USMCA) with the United States.
The US president-elect previously wrote on Truth Social that he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods from Mexico and Canada due to illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Trump has also promised to impose additional tariffs of 10% on all Chinese goods due to the alleged smuggling of drugs from China to the US. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has announced that the country's authorities are conducting a tough anti-narcotics policy.
