Armenian brandy on the EU market under the name Armenian brandy. RA intends to register it as a geographical indication

In the rebranding process of Armenian cognac, it is considered key that Armenian brandy be registered as a geographical indication. According to Armenpress, Armenian Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan said this at the joint session of the National Assembly's Committees on European Integration and Finance, Credit and Budgetary Affairs, "Armenpress 2023". At the discussion of the annual report on the implementation of the state budget of 2018, "As a result of the work carried out with the BEKPO company and the studies carried out by them, it was suggested to use the name Armenian brandy as a preferred option for Armenian cognac," Papoyan said. The EU was informed about the new name in October 2023. During the 5th session of the RA-EU trade partnership committee held on the 17th. The relevant directorates of the European Commission were informed in an official letter: "The new name will enable us to promote, advertise, market and ensure the implementation of quality control and control mechanisms for the production of marketed cognac. There is also support from the EU for this, in the amount of 2.9 million euros over 2 years," said Papoyan. Within the framework of the project, the EU support will be provided in the following directions: to define the requirements of the laboratory infrastructure to ensure the quality control of marketed brandy, to design a stable quality control system. "In the process of brandy rebranding, it is considered key that Armenian brandy with a new name be registered as a geographical indication, Armenian brandy be a brand, registered and protected, have clear standards, precise mechanisms of production quality control and control, to which all Armenian brandy must be subject. producers that will use the new geographical designation. If we give this geographical name to any brandy producer, then we must exclude any possibility of low-quality brandy production, let alone export," said the minister.
