Uniper transferred €500 million to Germany for claims against Gazprom

Unipertransferred €0.5 billion in payments to the German authorities for claims against Gazprom, the company said. On June 30, Uniper reserved €540 million for the transfer of compensation from claims for damages against Gazprom Export of Germany. "At the end of September, Uniper used part of this reserve and paid €530 million to Germany," the statement said.

Previously, the company pledged, as part of stabilization measures by the German authorities, to transfer to the government any compensation payments it receives for the reduction in gas supplies, after deducting legal costs and taxes.

At the end of last year, Uniper set aside about €2.2 billion for payments to Germany in connection with the company's 2022 bailout. At the end of September, the size of this reserve was revised and increased to €2.5 billion. The exact amount of payments will be calculated based on the company’s financial indicators and transferred to the German authorities at the beginning of 2025, Uniper notes.

On June 12, Uniper announced the termination of a long-term gas contract with Gazprom Export after receiving appropriate permission from arbitration in Stockholm. The company explained that the arbitration court on June 7 granted Uniper the right to terminate contracts and awarded it compensation in the amount of more than €13 billion for the volumes of gas that Gazprom Export has not supplied since mid-2022.
Until then, long-term gas supply contracts between the two companies would have continued until the mid-2030s.
