Demonstrations against the holding of the Olympic Games took place in Milan yesterday. Groups from Milan, Lombardy and other northern regions of Italy participated in the demonstration. Protesters have expressed their displeasure at the environmental impact of building the Olympic facilities, as well as what they call the "economic and social damage" caused by the Games. The march was organized by an activist organization called the Committee for Unsustainable Olympics, which brought together people from local sports initiatives, civic and environmental movements, students, housing rights activists, militant unions, pro-Palestinian networks and transfeminist collectives.
During the night, the demonstration turned violent, when some demonstrators targeted the police, throwing firecrackers and flares in their direction. In response, the authorities used tear gas and water cannons against the protesters.
The 2026 Winter Olympics officially kicked off on February 7, with an opening ceremony held at Milan's famous San Siro stadium, dedicated to Italy's rich art and culture.
