Anahit Manasyan participated in the event entitled "Access to Justice for Persons with Disabilities".

On October 28, Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan participated in the event entitled "Access to Justice for Persons with Disabilities" and made an opening speech. This was reported by the Defender's office.

"In his speech, the Defender noted that there are many problems related to ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities in Armenia.

In Armenia, unfortunately, stereotypes and stigma are reaching a huge volume, related to the attitude towards persons with disabilities, the circumstance of their disability and other similar issues. I notice this on a daily basis, not only during contacts with different groups, but also in personal contacts. During my regional visits, one of the most important agenda meetings is always with sectoral public organizations, as well as persons with disabilities and their family members. During those meetings, it becomes obvious that stereotypes still continue in large volume," the Defender noted.

Anahit Manasyan emphasized that in order to achieve real changes, a radical change in the education system is necessary, particularly in the field of human rights education.

"The most important thing today is that the education system, in particular, the education of human rights, undergoes a comprehensive and deep transformation. Only in that way can we form a tolerant, inclusive society, free from stigmas and stereotypes," the Human Rights Defender emphasized.

He also referred to the accessibility issues, noting that the results of the monitoring carried out by the Ombudsman's staff testify to the continuous problems of the accessible environment.

"Our monitoring shows that some state institutions, as well as buildings involved in the chain of justice, are still not accessible. Moreover, even newly built or reconstructed buildings often do not meet the current standards. This is inadmissible, because every citizen should be able to exercise their rights without obstacles and discrimination," Anahit Manasyan said.

Canadian Ambassador to Armenia Andrew Turner also gave an opening speech.

The discussion was organized by the NGO "Agenda of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities".

Within the framework of the program "Promotion of equal access to justice for persons with disabilities", which is implemented with the support of the Canadian Foundation for Local Initiatives, it is said in the message.
