Heart drugs have been found to have anti-cancer effects

Scientists from the University of Mississippi (USA) and Suresh Gyan Vihar University (India) have discovered the anti-cancer potential of natural compounds traditionally used to treat cardiovascular diseases. These compounds are cardiac glycosides, substances derived from plants. The study results were published in the journal Pharmacological Research - Natural Products (PRNP).

Glycosides are organic compounds derived from the Greek words glykys, meaning "sweet," and eidos, meaning "good," because they break down into sugar and non-sugar components. Glycosides are most commonly found in the leaves and flowers of plants. The scientists noted that they are currently used as an adjunctive treatment for cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure.

A study has shown that certain glycosides can interact with proteins and genes associated with hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer. For their analysis, the researchers used a network pharmacology approach that allows for the consideration of complex biological interactions between active substances and multiple targets in the body.

As a result, five potentially active compounds were identified. It is believed that they can interfere with signaling pathways important for tumor cell growth and survival. This ability can be used to further develop glycosides as targeted anticancer drugs.

The authors emphasize that the natural origin of glycosides potentially reduces the risk of severe side effects compared to traditional chemotherapy. However, further preclinical safety and efficacy studies are needed before proceeding to clinical trials.
