Regular use of sweet carbonated beverages increases not only the risk of obesity and diabetes, but also the likelihood of depression development, especially women. This conclusion was the researchers of the German Diabetes Research Center and Frankfurt and Cologne University Hospitals. The study was published in the Jama Psychiatry magazine.

Scientists have analyzed data from 18 to 65 people aged 932, including 405 patients with a large depressive disorder and 527 healthy volunteers. Women who often drank carbonated beverages were 17% higher risks to depression, and their symptoms were significantly heavier.

According to the authors, the intestinal microbomom plays an important role. In women who drank sweet drinks, the level of bactereans of the Eggerthella tribe, which used to be depressed. In men, no such connection was found. Only women's reason for this effect remains incomprehensible. This may be due to hormonal differences or amendment with the immune system.

"Our data show that the connection between carbonated drinks and depression is petitioned by the microbomom. Even small changes in the diet can have a significant impact, "explained the study head, doctor Sharmili Edwin Tanarajan.

The authors believe that the microbomom can be used as a therapeutic target in the future, such as food strategies or probiotics.
