Liver obesity was found 16 years before the appearance of symptoms

The researchers of the People's Hospital of the State Hospital in China have discovered five protein, which can predict the development of fatty liver disease 16 years before the appearance of the first signs. The results of the work were presented at the US Saturday Week (DDW) conference.

The fatty liver disease is developing when the hepatocytes (in organ cells) accumulates excess fat, which over time leads to inflammation and scaling of tissue. According to scientists, this situation doubles the risk of premature death.

Within the framework of the study, experts have analyzed blood samples of more than 50,000 participants in the British Biophanc project, which is one of the largest long-term health studies in the UK. They studied more than 2,700 protein and identified five who can serve as an early biomarkers of the disease.

This protein-based test showed 84% of the disease forecast for 84 years before it started, 76% accuracy, 16 years ago. Completing the analysis with the information on the level of body mass index and physical activity, the precision of the forecast was increased by up to 90% and 16 years later, up to 82%.

"Very often people learn about the problems of the liver only after the diagnosis and symptoms," said Shiyi Yun. "Our work shows that plasma proteins can be an effective tool for early detection and prevention of disease."
