Armenia once again registers a negative balance with Georgia in the field of electricity trade

Vahe Davtyan, Doctor of Political Sciences, Energy Expert, writes on his Facebook page. "Armenia is once again registering a negative balance with Georgia in the field of electricity trade.

2024 Georgia exported 137.43 million kWh of electricity to Armenia. At the same time, imports from Armenia amounted to only 72.70 million kWh, which is 6% in the structure of Georgia's electricity imports.

For comparison, the import of electricity from Azerbaijan amounted to 185.97 million kWh (weight in the structure of imports - 15%).

It is noteworthy that the share of electricity imports in Georgia still belongs to Russia. The latter provided 79% of it in 2024 or 968.84 million kWh.

Electricity consumption in Georgia is constantly growing. Until 2030 The country can lead to a serious shortcoming, as the demand for electricity will increase by about 73%, reaching 22 billion kWh.

In parallel with the expansion of domestic capacity, Georgia will inevitably increase electricity imports.

And this, in turn, dictates Armenia to intensify the construction of a new power transmission line with Georgia as an integral part of the North-South Electricity Corridor.

Today, however, the process of implementing the program is almost paralyzed.

The reason, as in other matters, is the lack of political will, as well as the lack of geopolitical thinking. "
