The RA MFA issued a statement on the 37th anniversary of the massacres in Sumgait, which states:
"1988 These days, on February 27-29, a series of crimes in the territory of that state, which was openly sponsored by the state, the beginning of large-scale massacres against Armenians, turning decades of oversized pressure and persecution into open and mass violence.
The mass killings and torture of citizens of Armenian origin in Sumagay continued in Baku, Kirovabad and Maragha, the same pattern and terrific brutality. Hundreds of Armenians were killed and about half a million Armenians were killed.
Politicials of violence continued until September 2023, when the Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh was completely pursued. Recalling these events, we pay tribute to the memory of their innocent victims every year.
At the same time, we believe that these events are not just a commemoration date, but also moments to appreciate the need to overcome enmity in the future. "
