The former president of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, who was sentenced to prison in his homeland and lived in Nicaragua, died at the age of 65. This is reported by the Ministry of Health of Nicaragua.
"The former president of El Salvador, Carlos Mauricio Funes Cartagena, who lived in our country, died tonight due to a serious chronic illness," the department said in a statement.
In 2018, El Salvador's attorney general's office issued an arrest warrant for Funes for alleged involvement in the theft of approximately $350 million, as well as money laundering.
Funes ruled the country from 2009 to 2014 and was granted asylum in Nicaragua in 2016. In 2023, El Salvadoran authorities sentenced Funes in absentia to 14 years in prison for conspiracy with gang members, as well as six years in prison for tax evasion.
