Canada does not want to be part of the United States and will defend its independence. Such a statement was made by Christia Freeland, candidate for the position of leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.
"We're happy to be your neighbors, but we don't want to join you. Canadians are proud and independent. And we intend to keep it that way," he wrote in a column for The Washington Post.
Freeland recalled that everything started as a joke, which was made at the residence of the newly elected US President Donald Trump, Mar-a-Lago, and in several posts on social networks. However, recently a columnist for The New York Times seriously suggested making Canada the 51st state.
Don't doubt our determination," emphasized Freeland, addressing the Americans.
Instead of confrontation, the former deputy prime minister of Canada suggested to the USA to strengthen economic and security ties.
