Representatives of the EU diplomatic mission will go to Damascus to establish contacts with the new leadership of Syria, the head of EU diplomacy, Kaya Kalas, announced this before the meeting of foreign ministers of the EU countries.
"I instructed high-ranking European diplomats to go to Damascus to establish contact with the new government," Kalas said, quoted by Interfax agency. "First we have to decide at what level we will communicate with the new Syrian leadership and what steps we want to take to establish relations with them. Not only their words, but also their actions are important for us," Kalas said, answering the question about the possibility of removing a number of Syrian groups from the list of terrorists.
According to Kalas, "the coming weeks and months will show whether they are moving in the right direction, and then we will be ready to discuss further steps."
On December 8, opposition representatives entered Damascus and announced on state television that they had established control over the country. The transitional government of Syria is headed by Mohammed al-Bashir.
