UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has expressed his opposition to the use of anti-personnel mines during the Ukrainian conflict.
"Anti-personnel mines pose a real threat to civilians. Even after hostilities cease, these terrible and indiscriminate weapons can keep people in fear for generations," he said.
Guterres' statement was published on the website of the world organization.
The Secretary-General also called on world leaders to join the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel landmines, which has been signed by 164 states since its entry into force in 1999.
On November 20, the Pentagon confirmed to TASS that the US administration has authorized the use of anti-personnel mines in Ukraine.
On November 21, the US Department of Defense did not exclude the possibility of new supplies of anti-personnel mines to the Kiev regime.
