Italian peacekeepers serving as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were hit by a rocket attack believed to have been carried out by Hezbollah, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said. This is reported by ANSA.
"They were probably Hezbollah's light rockets that hit the base of the city of Shamaa in Lebanon. They had no right to do that. These are the troops that received security guarantees, including from "Hezbollah", the minister said.
There were eight rockets. According to the Italian Ministry of Defense, there were no casualties or injuries during the incident. The missiles hit the warehouse and the open area of the base.
UNIFIL said the missile strike caused serious damage to the repair facility.
A representative of the Israel Defense Forces told ANSA that the Israeli military did not take part in the incident.
Argentina, one of the 48 countries participating in the UNIFIL mission, notified its leadership of the withdrawal of its officers. UNIFIL did not give a reason for this step and suggested to address the relevant questions to the Argentine authorities.
