Will joining the Rome Statute bring any benefit to Armenia? "Fact"

"Fact" daily writes:

"Armenia, as a member of the International Criminal Court, should investigate the attack on Ganja in 2020," said Hikmet Hajiyev, advisor to the President of Azerbaijan.

Threatening statements and demands by Azerbaijan are not really new, but the problem here is what did Armenia get, the membership of the International Criminal Court.

For example, the Telegram channel "Republic Square" believes that this does not provide any real political or legal benefit to Yerevan, on the contrary, RA is taking on obligations that may harm the long-term interests of the Armenian state. "Azerbaijan demands from Armenia to investigate the cases that occurred as a result of the war, but in response, Yerevan does not demand from Baku to investigate the ethnic cleansing of Armenians in Artsakh, war crimes against the civilian population, the use of phosphorous weapons, etc.

In addition, accession to the Rome Statute led to tension in Armenian-Russian relations due to the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Yerevan and possible arrest. Of course, RA will never take such a step, but joining the Rome Statute was already perceived ambiguously in Moscow."

It should be noted that Armenia is the 124th country to sign the Rome Statute, the fundamental treaty of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The Rome Statute entered into force for Armenia on February 1. the parliament ratified it on October 3, 2023.

According to many political scientists, joining the Rome Statute was another curtsy of Nikol Pashinyan and his CP to the West and the continued manifestation of anti-Russian foreign policy.

"Pashinyan and CP destroyed the security pillars of Armenian statehood, Artsakh, as the shield and back of RA and in particular Syunik, Armenian-Russian strategic, alliance relations, without receiving adequate support and compensation from the West in return, as well as the number one guarantor of Armenian statehood. They broke the backbone of the army and continue to weaken all security components.

Instead of strengthening real security, the current authorities of Armenia want to compensate for the vacuum and gaps in the security system of Armenia by joining some structures that do not decide anything in geopolitics today, but in vain," the authors of the channel note and add that Azerbaijan's military aggression against Artsakh and while carrying out ethnic cleansing, he ignored and is still ignoring international law and norms, including humanitarian ones.

Today, power and military-political, financial power play a decisive role in the world - realpolitik, not some international agreements or the silent condemning statements of the international community.

According to "Republic Square" analysts, when Azerbaijan decides to attack Syunik this time to get the so-called "Zangezur Corridor", Baku will ignore Armenia's membership in the Rome Statute, because the same West continues to buy billions of dollars worth of oil and gas from Azerbaijan. and perceive that country as an exit to the Caspian Sea and Central Asia, as well as a possible springboard against Iran in a future war.
