The Israeli army again used incendiary ammunition containing white phosphorus against the villagers during the harvest in southern Lebanon, Mohammed Hosseini, the head of the farmers' association of southern Lebanon, told "RIA Novosti".
"The Israeli army has again used internationally banned incendiary bombs containing white phosphorus directly against the villagers while they were harvesting crops in southern Lebanon," Husseini said. According to him, a large number of farmers, including citizens of Lebanon, Syria and Palestine, who were working on agricultural lands in the south of the country, were killed as a result of the Israeli strikes.
Hosseini noted that the intensive use of white phosphorus during the strikes on southern Lebanon led to the complete destruction of agricultural lands and the burning of crops.
"White phosphorus damages not only the current season, but also the future harvest. It damages water, soil, mature trees, as well as livestock, poultry and beekeeping," the source of the agency added.
White phosphorus is a chemical substance that ignites under the influence of oxygen. It is used for military purposes to create smoke screens and illuminate the battlefield, but its incendiary properties can cause casualties. The use of such ammunition against civilians is prohibited by international convention.
