Courts have given thousands of permissions to read private SMS. alarming numbers. "People"

"Zhoghovurd" daily writes:

"In Armenia, the right to privacy of a person's personal life, especially the privacy of personal correspondence and communication, is seriously questioned. While studying the official statistics, the "Zhoghovurd" daily newspaper found out that the pre-investigative bodies submit thousands of petitions to the courts every year for permission to confiscate correspondence and other forms of communication, and most of the courts grant them. This means that privacy of private SMS and communication of citizens is practically not guaranteed.

"Zhoghovurd" daily newspaper presents the official statistical data, which refer to the petitions submitted to the courts by pre-investigative bodies within the framework of pre-trial proceedings, regarding confiscation of correspondence and other forms of communication.

Thus, in 2023, pre-trial bodies submitted 666 motions to the court, 361 of which were satisfied. In other words, the courts satisfied more than half of the petitions.

In 2024, the number increased. 647 petitions were submitted to the courts, of which 383 were satisfied.

The picture of 2025 is even more worrying. "Zhoghovurd" daily found out that only during the previous year, pre-investigation bodies submitted 6,662 petitions to courts, of which 4,571 were satisfied.
