Georgian Prime Minister made a statement on relations with Russia

Georgia has no diplomatic relations with Russia, nor any plans to build them, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at a briefing. His words are quoted by News.ru.

“We do not have diplomatic relations with the Russian Federation. We are simply pursuing the president’s policy in the national interests. But we do not have such serious relations as, for example, European integration with foreign policy players,” the politician explained.

On the night of August 8, 2008, Georgia fired at South Ossetia from Grad multiple rocket launchers. Georgian troops attacked the republic and severely destroyed its capital, the city of Tskhinvali. Russia, protecting the residents of South Ossetia, many of whom had accepted Russian citizenship, sent troops into the republic and, after five days of fighting, ousted the Georgian military from there.

Moscow on August 26 of the same year recognized the sovereignty of South Ossetia and another former Georgian autonomy, Abkhazia. The Russian leadership has repeatedly stated that this recognition reflects existing realities and is not subject to revision. Georgia still does not recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia and considers them its regions.
