Apple plans to remove buttons from all of its devices

Apple is planning to ditch traditional mechanical buttons in favor of solid-state control buttons, not only in future iPhone generations, but also in other Apple devices, according to GizmoChina, citing an inside source at Setsuna Digital.

According to the source, before the release of the iPhone 20 in 2027, Apple intends to mass-produce solid-state buttons for the power button, volume control, function buttons and camera controls. They will be based on pressure sensors and localized vibration technology, simulating the tactile sensation of mechanical compression without the use of moving components.

The transition will be gradual. In the iPhone 18 expected in 2026, the company may simplify the camera shutter button by replacing it with a capacitor layer that provides pressure sensitivity. Later, Apple plans to introduce piezoelectric ceramic elements that provide more realistic haptic feedback.

The project, internally codenamed Bongo, aims to improve reliability and eliminate accidental clicks. With no mechanical wear and tear, the manufacturer expects improved durability and expanded control options, from power-press gestures to swiping across the button area.

According to industry analysts, the use of solid buttons may gradually spread to the entire Apple ecosystem, including future iPad and Apple Watch models.
