UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a change in the current version of climate policy to avoid critical situations in the future. In an interview with the Guardian, Guterres said that humanity has "failed" and must admit that people have not been able to avoid temperatures above 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next few years.
"It is necessary to change the direction to ensure the shortest possible and lowest intensity emissions to avoid critical situations.
We do not want the Amazon to turn into a savannah. However, this is a real risk if we do not change direction and reduce emissions as soon as possible," the UN Secretary General insisted. The Paris Climate Agreement signed in 2015 within the framework of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change united the efforts of all world powers for the first time in history to curb climate change.
