Saakashvili's rival Levan Gachechiladze dies in the 2008 elections in Georgia

Levan Gachechiladze, a member of parliament of the Fifth and Sixth In addition to Georgia, has died after a long illness. This was reported by the first wave of the Georgian public broadcaster, citing the relatives and friends of the politician.

Gachechiladze was recently ill. He was treated in Turkey, but to no avail. He was 61 years old.

Gachechiladze started his political career in 1999, becoming a member of the parliament of Georgia's fifth convocation. He entered the parliament with the party list of the ruling party of the Georgian Citizens of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze.

In 2004, Gachechiladze was re-elected to the parliament again, but this time as the majoritarian system of Tbilisi Vake constituency.

He was one of the harsh opponents of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.

In 2008, Gachechiladze was a Georgian presidential candidate and Saakashvili's main rival. In the presidential election, he received 25.7% of the vote and took the second place.
