Politico: EU will tighten sanctions against Russia after Hungary leaves its presidency

The European Union intends to tighten its sanctions policy towards Russia after Hungary leaves the post of chairman of the EU Council at the end of the year and Poland assumes this position. This was reported by the Politico newspaper. Warsaw has already made it clear, as the publication emphasizes, that it “wants to use its six-month leadership [in the EU] to tighten control over Russian fuel coming to the continent.” “Russian energy imports are growing, we need to fix this,” Politico quotes Polish Deputy Minister of Climate and Environment Krzysztof Bolesta as saying.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban used his country's presidency to effectively halt sanctions talks, diplomats and officials said. Member states are now counting on Poland to put sensitive issues back on the agenda. “We hope that all issues will be resolved without delay,” said the community’s senior diplomat.
"We need to recognize that the sanctions regime is not working the way it should - there are problems with liquefied natural gas, there are problems with oil, there are problems with certain goods," he added.
