The Union of Reserve Officers of the National Security Service and the Conscious Society Socio-Legal Center have agreed to launch a joint fight against online gambling.
The two organizations signed a corresponding memorandum today. The statement they issued states that over the past six years, the total amount of bets made in the field of online gambling in Armenia has increased by an unprecedented 2037%, amounting to about 67 billion USD.
“The origin of these funds raises serious questions, in particular, it is unclear from what sources these funds originate and how and to whom the winnings of about 65 billion USD were given, as well as what control mechanisms have been introduced by the state, law enforcement agencies and the Central Bank to manage this process,” the statement states.
It is also worth noting that the issue in question involves not only the need for financial control, but also “has a direct bearing on national security in the context of combating possible money laundering and terrorist financing.”
At the same time, both institutions emphasize that hundreds of thousands of citizens, including representatives of socially vulnerable groups, have found themselves in a difficult financial situation, deprived of their savings, jeopardizing the social well-being of families.
