In the U.S. state of North Carolina, a driver suspected of driving under the influence crashed into a group of cyclists. One person has died, and at least 12 others were injured, NBC News reports.

The accident occurred on a Saturday morning on Optimist Farm Road in Wake County, about 23 kilometers northwest of Raleigh.

According to the state highway patrol, 76-year-old Donald Robert Morris-Jones crossed the dividing line and struck the cyclists.

After the collision, the driver left the scene, then about 800 meters later veered off the road on the left side and fell into a roadside ditch. Police arrived at the accident site shortly after 9:30 a.m.

The deceased is 63-year-old Patrick Allen Tern, a resident of Cary. The injured sustained varying degrees of injuries, ranging from minor to severe. Several people were hospitalized.

Morris-Jones was arrested. Charges have been filed against him for causing death by a motor vehicle accident, seven counts of inflicting serious bodily injury by a motor vehicle accident, eight counts of leaving the scene of the accident, driving under the influence, reckless driving, and driving into the opposite lane.

The highway patrol stated that intoxication may have been one of the causes of the accident. The man was taken to the Wake County jail. His bail is set at one million dollars.
